Chapter 5 - The Signature Trap

By the time Claire reached New York, the anonymous sender had gone silent.
That worried her more than the messages themselves.
Whoever had warned her knew about the affair, the shares, the resort, and the documents.
That person was either very close to Daniel or very close to Kelly.
Maya arranged for Claire to stay in a discreet hotel near Mercer Atlantic's headquarters.
She barely unpacked.
At midnight, Leon called from the forensic firm's office.
"We found the restructuring file."
Claire sat upright.
"What is it?"
"A proposed recapitalization."
"Daniel's version creates a new class of voting shares."
"Those shares would be issued to an executive holding company controlled by him."
Claire felt the blood drain from her face.
"Could he outvote the trust?"
"If the documents were validly approved, yes."
Maya joined the call.
"The key is your consent."
"The company charter requires approval from the controlling shareholder for any voting-class change."
Claire stared at the dark window.
"So the resort trip was about getting me to sign."
"It appears that way."
Leon sent her a scanned draft.
The document looked ordinary at first glance.
The dangerous language was buried on page thirty-seven.
Daniel had marked the packet as tax simplification materials.
Claire remembered him saying exactly that at dinner two weeks earlier.
Just routine tax cleanup.
Nothing worth bothering you about.
She had almost signed then.
He had told her the notary would be at Saint Aurelia if she preferred to handle it somewhere pleasant.
Claire covered her mouth.
The betrayal suddenly felt larger than Kelly.
An affair could destroy a marriage.
This could have stripped Claire of the company her father built.
Maya's voice softened.
"There is something else."
"The draft includes a representation that you received independent legal advice."
Claire looked at her.
"I didn't."
"I know."
"And the lawyer listed as your counsel is someone I've never heard of."
Leon sent another file.
The attorney was named Preston Shaw.
His firm had represented Daniel personally three times in the past.
Claire's anger returned.
"Call him."
Maya shook her head.
"Not yet."
"First we preserve the evidence."
At Saint Aurelia, Daniel was doing the opposite.
He stood on the balcony of the garden room while Kelly paced behind him.
The room had one bed.
Under different circumstances, that might have delighted her.
Now it only made the situation uglier.
"You said Claire was checked out of the business."
Kelly's voice was sharp.
"She was."
"You said she signed whatever you put in front of her."
"Usually."
Kelly stared at him.
"And you were going to give me ten percent after the restructure."
Daniel turned.
"I still can."
"Can you?"
He stepped toward her.
"Stop panicking."
Kelly held up her phone.
"The board's legal team just sent me a preservation notice."
Daniel went still.
"What?"
"They told me not to delete emails, texts, calendar entries, or expense records."
Daniel's face tightened.
"Give me the phone."
Kelly moved it behind her back.
"No."
He lowered his voice.
"Kelly."
"You work for me."
She looked at him with sudden disgust.
"Apparently I work for a company your wife owns."
Daniel lunged for the phone.
Kelly stepped away.
For one second, both of them froze.
Then Kelly smiled bitterly.
"You know what the funny part is?"
"I thought I was the secret."
May you like
She slipped the phone into her purse.
"Now I think I'm just another document you planned to use."
