Chapter 1 - The Hand on the Wound.

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic, cold metal, and rain carried in from the open corridor.
Rachel Hayes lay pale beneath a thin blanket, one hand gripping the rail while the other hovered protectively over the thick white bandage around her abdomen.
She had been out of surgery for less than six hours.
Every breath pulled at the fresh stitches beneath the dressing.
Evelyn Carter stood beside the bed in a dark purple blazer, her blonde hair pulled back so tightly that it seemed to sharpen her face.
Her voice had already filled the room twice before Daniel arrived.
âYou always know how to make yourself the victim.â
Rachel stared at her, too weak to argue.
âI almost died.â
Evelyn gave a short, disgusted laugh.
âYou were in a minor accident.â
Rachelâs eyes filled with disbelief.
âThe surgeon removed part of my spleen.â
Evelyn leaned closer.
âYou married my son and suddenly every inconvenience becomes a tragedy.â
Rachel reached toward the call button.
Evelyn caught her wrist.
The movement sent a bolt of pain through Rachelâs abdomen.
âPlease stop.â
Evelynâs expression hardened.
âStop putting on an act!â
Then she placed both hands on the bandaged wound and pressed down.
Rachel screamed.
The sound tore through the room and into the hallway.
Daniel Carter had just stepped through the doorway when he saw his motherâs hands on his wifeâs abdomen.
For one second, his face went completely still.
Then he crossed the room so fast that the chair beside the door toppled behind him.
He grabbed Evelyn by the lapels of her blazer and ripped her away from the bed.
âWhat are you doing?â
Evelyn stumbled backward.
Daniel shoved her against the wall beside the doorframe and held her there.
Her fury disappeared almost instantly.
Her eyes widened.
âDaniel, let go of me.â
He was crying before he realized it.
âWhat did you do?â
Behind him, Rachel curled around her wound and gasped for air.
A dark stain began spreading beneath the edge of the white bandage.
Evelyn looked past Daniel and saw it.
For the first time, true fear crossed her face.
Daniel followed her gaze.
âRachel?â
The heart monitor accelerated.
Rachelâs lips trembled.
âDaniel, she knew.â
He turned back toward her.
âKnew what?â
Rachel tried to answer, but a nurse rushed into the room with two orderlies and a doctor behind her.
âEveryone away from the bed now.â
Daniel released his mother and stepped back.
Dr. Lena Park lifted the dressing and swore under her breath.
âWe have fresh bleeding.â
Evelyn moved toward the door.
Daniel blocked her path.
âYou are not leaving.â
She stared at him as though he were a stranger.
âYou do not speak to your mother that way.â
Danielâs face trembled with rage.
âYou are no longer my mother.â
Evelynâs lips parted, but no answer came.
As the medical team wheeled Rachel toward emergency imaging, Rachel caught Danielâs sleeve.
Her fingers were icy.
âThere was a car behind me before the crash.â
Daniel bent closer.
Rachel forced out the next words through the pain.
Daniel wanted to demand more, but Rachel's face had gone gray and the medical team was already moving.
He followed until the doors closed between them.
For the first time in his life, he did not wonder whether his mother would forgive him.

He wondered whether the woman who raised him had been waiting for this moment.
âIt belonged to your mother.â
