Chapter 8 - The Nurse's Confession.

Tessa Glenn looked smaller without her hospital uniform.
She sat in an interview room at the police station wearing a gray sweatshirt and trembling so badly she could barely hold the paper cup in front of her.
Daniel watched through one-way glass with Detective Briggs.
Tessaâs attorney sat beside her.
âI did not hurt Rachel in the room.â
Briggs leaned toward the microphone.
âThen explain your badge.â
Tessa wiped her eyes.
âVictor took it.â
âWhy did you give it to him?â
âHe had photographs of my son leaving school.â
Danielâs stomach tightened.
Tessa continued.
âHe said if I reported him, my boy would disappear.â
âWhat did he want?â
âMy badge, a staff schedule, and access to the medication system.â
Briggs asked the obvious question.
âDid you add the sedative?â
Tessa shook her head violently.
âNo.â
âYour credentials did.â
âHe had my password.â
Daniel looked at Briggs.
This was no longer a single desperate driver.
Someone had planned every detail.
Tessa reached into the evidence bag containing the folded paper she had carried from the hospital.
âIt was under my windshield this morning.â
Briggs unfolded it with gloves.
It was a printed photograph of Tessaâs ten-year-old son standing outside his school.
Across the bottom were three words.
DO NOT FAIL AGAIN.
âWhat was the first failure?â
Tessa began crying harder.
âI was supposed to swap Rachelâs property bag before her husband arrived.â
Danielâs eyes narrowed.
âThe envelope.â
âI never found it.â
âWho ordered you?â
Tessa looked toward the one-way glass as though she knew Daniel was there.
âVictor gave me the instructions.â
âWho gave them to Victor?â
Tessa swallowed.
âHe never said a name.â
Briggs leaned closer.
âBut?â
Tessa lowered her voice.
âI heard him on the phone once.â
âWhat did you hear?â
âHe said, âMrs. Carter, it will be handled.ââ
Daniel walked out of the observation room before he could hear anything else.
His mother had always controlled rooms without raising her voice.
She controlled family dinners, board meetings, vacations, funerals, and even grief.
Now Daniel wondered how many things she had controlled that he never saw.
Back at the hospital, Rachel was conscious again.
Daniel told her about Tessa.
Rachel listened silently.
Then she asked one question.
âWhere is your mother now?â
Daniel called security.
Evelyn had left the hospital two hours earlier with Arthur Bell.
No one knew where they had gone.
Daniel opened the family-location application on his phone.
Years ago, Evelyn had insisted everyone install it for emergencies.
Her device still shared its location with him.
A blue dot appeared on the screen.
It was moving north on Interstate 95.
Daniel zoomed in.
The destination direction made his blood run cold.
Evelyn was heading toward the Carter family lake house.
Briggs warned Daniel not to confront Evelyn at the lake house.
Daniel promised nothing.
He remembered summers there when Robert taught him to fish from the old dock and Evelyn watched from the porch with a glass of wine.
Those memories had once felt safe.
May you like
Now every one of them seemed to contain a locked door.
That was where Robert Carter had died.
