Chapter 12 - Under Her Name.

Robert’s letter was released to Daniel after investigators photographed and cataloged it.

He opened it in a quiet conference room with Rachel beside him in a wheelchair.

Her doctors had reluctantly allowed her out of bed for twenty minutes.

The envelope contained three pages.

Robert’s handwriting became shakier with every paragraph.

DANIEL, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I FAILED TO FIX MY OWN HOUSE BEFORE IT FELL ON YOU.

Daniel paused.

Rachel placed a hand over his.

He continued.

Robert explained that he had discovered Evelyn and Arthur diverting company funds through shell corporations.

At first he believed Evelyn had been manipulated by Arthur.

Then he found signatures she had personally authorized.

He planned to confront them after moving control of the family trust beyond their reach.

The final page contained a strange sentence.

THE TRUTH IS UNDER YOUR MOTHER'S NAME, BUT NOT WHERE SHE CAN SEE IT.

Below it was a bank name and a box number.

Detective Briggs obtained another warrant.

The safe-deposit box was registered to Evelyn Carter.

She claimed she knew nothing about it.

That part appeared to be true.

Robert had opened the box using a corporate identity document that allowed spouses limited access at the time.

Inside were original trust papers, account ledgers, and a sealed vial wrapped in evidence-grade plastic.

There was also a handwritten note identifying the vial as a sample from medication Robert believed Evelyn had been putting into his drinks.

Laboratory testing later detected a cardiac drug that could become dangerous at high doses.

The same drug appeared in records from the private medical service at the lake house.

Daniel felt physically ill.

Briggs placed the evidence on the table between them.

“This does not prove who administered the fatal dose.”

“But it proves Dad was afraid of her.”

“Yes.”

A second ledger revealed something even worse.

Millions had moved from Carter Properties into accounts controlled by Arthur and Evelyn.

Then, six months before Robert died, the payments changed.

Evelyn’s share decreased.

Arthur’s increased.

Rachel studied the entries.

“He was taking control from her.”

Briggs nodded.

“That may explain the blackmail.”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“And the trust amendment after Dad died made sure Mom still had leverage if I died.”

Briggs’s silence answered him.

Daniel remembered Rachel driving his car on the day of the crash.

He looked up suddenly.

“Victor said Arthur ordered the hit on Rachel.”

“Yes.”

“But did Arthur know she was driving my car?”

Briggs frowned.

Daniel continued.

“The car is registered to me.”

Rachel’s face changed.

“Daniel.”

Briggs immediately called Victor’s interrogators.

The answer came fifteen minutes later.

Victor had been told to strike Daniel Carter’s vehicle and make the death look accidental.

He did not realize Rachel was driving until after impact.

Arthur had not ordered Rachel’s murder.

He had ordered Daniel’s.

Rachel stared at her husband.

Daniel stared at the trust clause that transferred control to Evelyn if he died childless.

Then Briggs delivered the final piece.

The possibility that Daniel had been the intended victim settled over the room with terrifying clarity.

Rachel had survived because the impact angle changed when she swerved.

If Daniel had been driving, he would probably have taken the full force on the driver's side.

The trust clause no longer looked like legal manipulation.
