Chapter 13 - The Son She Was Willing to Lose.

Daniel asked to speak with Evelyn alone.

Police refused.

He settled for an interview room with a camera, two detectives behind the glass, and Rachel watching from another floor through a secure video feed.

Evelyn entered wearing the same dark purple blazer from the hospital confrontation.

It had been returned after evidence photographs were taken.

She sat across from Daniel.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Daniel placed a copy of the trust clause on the table.

“You knew Arthur planned to kill me.”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“He threatened many things.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I did not believe he would do it.”

“You met Victor two days before the crash.”

“To stop Arthur.”

“Did you warn me?”

Evelyn looked away.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Did you call me?”

“No.”

“Did you call the police?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Rachel not to drive my car?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

Daniel sat back as if struck.

“You knew.”

“I thought Victor would frighten Arthur and end it.”

“You knew someone might try to kill me and you said nothing.”

“I was trying to protect everything your father built.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Everything except me.”

Evelyn began crying.

“I made terrible choices.”

“You let Dad die.”

She covered her face.

“I was afraid.”

“You were afraid of losing money.”

“That is not fair.”

Daniel’s chair scraped backward.

“Rachel was lying in a hospital bed because of a murder plan you knew about, and you pressed your hands into her wound.”

“I thought she had turned you against me.”

“She did not have to.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“You did that yourself.”

Evelyn looked at him desperately.

“You are my son.”

Daniel remembered saying the opposite in the hospital room.

Now the words felt heavier.

“You were my mother.”

Evelyn froze.

Daniel stood.

“I spent my whole life thinking your cruelty was strength.”

He wiped tears from his face.

“I thought your control meant you cared more than everyone else.”

He shook his head.

“It only meant you needed everyone trapped where you could reach them.”

Daniel walked toward the door.

Evelyn called after him.

“Daniel, please.”

He stopped but did not turn.

“If Rachel had died, would you have come to her funeral?”

Evelyn said nothing.

That silence ended what remained between them.

Daniel left the room.

Minutes later, prosecutors approved Evelyn’s arrest on conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and charges related to Robert’s death pending final review.

Arthur, recovering under guard, agreed to provide documents in exchange for avoiding the harshest sentence possible.

His first delivery contained seventeen years of financial records.

His second contained an audio file.

The recording had been made in the lake house on the night Robert died.

Daniel listened only once.

His father could be heard gasping in the background.

Evelyn asked for water before officers led her away.

Her hands shook around the paper cup, yet her eyes remained calculating.

Daniel recognized that look from board meetings where she had already decided who would be blamed.

Even now, with the walls closing around her, part of her was still searching for someone else to sacrifice.

Then Evelyn’s voice said clearly, “Do not call anyone yet.”
