Chapter 11 - The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Arthur Bell’s escape lasted eleven minutes.

It was still long enough to terrify everyone involved.

He slipped away during a transfer between buildings after faking chest pain and knocking down a deputy in a medical corridor.

Police found the abandoned transport jacket in a stairwell.

Then Rachel’s hospital floor lost power.

Emergency lights came on immediately.

Machines switched to backup batteries.

Daniel stood beside Rachel’s bed as alarms echoed through the corridor.

“This is not a coincidence.”

Security locked every entrance.

Nurses moved patients away from unsecured doors.

Daniel received a text from an unknown number.

COME ALONE TO THE OLD PEDIATRIC WING OR RACHEL'S SISTER DIES.

His blood turned cold.

He called Maya.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Daniel showed the message to Briggs.

“Arthur has her.”

“We do not know that.”

“Then where is she?”

Briggs immediately sent officers to Maya’s apartment and traced the number.

The signal came from inside the hospital.

Daniel refused to remain in Rachel’s room.

Briggs finally allowed him to stay behind the tactical team.

The old pediatric wing had been closed for renovation.

Plastic sheets hung over doorways.

Dust floated through the dim emergency lighting.

A phone rang somewhere ahead.

Daniel recognized Maya’s ringtone.

They found her phone lying on the floor beside an empty wheelchair.

No Maya.

Then Arthur’s voice came from behind them.

“Daniel.”

He stood at the far end of the corridor holding a syringe against his own neck.

There was no weapon visible.

Briggs raised his gun.

“Drop the syringe.”

Arthur laughed.

“You still think this is about survival?”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is Maya?”

“Safe.”

“You caused Rachel’s crash.”

“I protected an empire your father was too weak to manage.”

Daniel’s eyes burned.

“You killed him.”

Arthur’s smile disappeared.

“Your mother killed him the moment she chose money over an ambulance.”

Daniel stopped.

Arthur continued.

“I only finished what she started.”

“Why Rachel?”

“Because she found the accounts.”

“She found you stealing.”

Arthur’s eyes sharpened.

“Your mother stole first.”

The tactical team shifted closer.

Arthur pressed the syringe harder against his neck.

“I kept records.”

“Where?”

Arthur looked at Daniel.

“Your father’s letter tells you.”

Before Daniel could respond, Arthur injected himself.

Officers rushed him.

He collapsed within seconds.

Medics managed to stabilize him.

Inside Arthur’s coat, police found a key card and Maya’s bracelet.

The card opened a locked rehabilitation room two floors below.

Maya was inside, bound to a chair but alive.

She had heard Arthur talking on the phone before he moved her.

When Daniel untied her, she whispered one sentence.

“He told someone the evidence was not in the lake house.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Where is it?”

Maya swallowed.

Maya had bruises around her wrists but refused transport until she saw Rachel.

When the sisters finally faced each other, neither spoke for several seconds.

Maya bent carefully over the bed and hugged her.

May you like

Daniel watched them and understood how close he had come to losing every person who had tried to tell him the truth.

“He said your father hid everything under your mother’s name.”
