Chapter 6 - The Signature That Wasn't Hers.

The forged power of attorney gave Evelyn authority over Rachel’s medical decisions if Daniel was unavailable.

It also contained a clause permitting access to medical records and property held by the hospital.

Daniel read it twice.

Then he handed it to Detective Briggs.

“This is not her signature.”

“You are certain?”

“I watched Rachel sign our mortgage, our marriage license, and a thousand birthday cards.”

Daniel pointed at the final letter.

“She never closes the loop in her H like that.”

Briggs photographed the document.

“Who presented this?”

The hospital administrator looked uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Carter’s attorney, Arthur Bell.”

Daniel felt something inside him drop.

Arthur arrived downstairs wearing the same calm expression Daniel remembered from childhood.

He was sixty-three, silver-haired, precise, and almost impossible to rattle.

“Daniel, this has gone too far.”

“You brought a forged document into a hospital.”

Arthur sighed.

“Rachel signed it weeks ago.”

“No, she did not.”

“You are emotional.”

“My wife was nearly killed.”

“And your mother was assaulted by her own son.”

Daniel stepped closer.

Briggs moved between them before the distance became dangerous.

Arthur adjusted his cuff.

“This family is being manipulated by a woman who does not understand what she married into.”

Daniel stared at him.

“What did she marry into, Arthur?”

For the first time, Arthur’s expression shifted.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Daniel continued.

“What happened three days after my father died?”

Arthur’s eyes cooled.

“I have no idea what you are talking about.”

“The trust amendment.”

Arthur looked toward Briggs.

“This is privileged family business.”

“A dead man signed it.”

Arthur smiled without humor.

“Then I suggest you hire a competent estate lawyer before making accusations in public.”

He walked away.

Daniel watched him enter the elevator.

Briggs spoke quietly.

“He knew exactly what you meant.”

Daniel nodded.

Upstairs, Rachel was sleeping when Daniel returned.

Maya sat beside the bed.

She was twenty-nine, blunt, suspicious, and fiercely loyal to her sister.

She held out a small key.

“Rachel gave me this two weeks ago.”

Daniel took it.

“What does it open?”

“She said I should only give it to you if she ended up in a hospital or disappeared.”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“That is disturbingly specific.”

Maya nodded.

“She was scared.”

A number was etched onto the key.

417.

Daniel searched nearby storage facilities and bank lockers.

Nothing matched.

Then Maya remembered something.

“Rachel used to rent a locker at Union Station when she was traveling for work.”

Daniel and Briggs drove there together.

Locker 417 stood at the far end of a quiet row.

The key turned.

Inside was a cheap burner phone, a sealed envelope, and a digital voice recorder.

Daniel opened the envelope first.

There was one photograph inside.

It showed Evelyn sitting in a restaurant booth across from Victor Lane.

The timestamp was two days before Rachel’s crash.

On the back, Rachel had written six words.

Briggs photographed the locker before removing the contents.

Daniel stood several feet away, fighting the urge to tear everything open at once.

The photograph proved Rachel had not imagined Evelyn's connection to Victor.

The recorder might prove something worse.

For the first time, Daniel was afraid of hearing his father's voice again.
