The criminal case exploded across the city.

Carter Properties lost contracts overnight.

Board members resigned.

Reporters surrounded the hospital, the police station, and every entrance to the company’s headquarters.

Daniel refused all interviews.

Rachel remained his only priority.

Her recovery was slower because of the internal bleeding caused by Evelyn’s assault.

Each time she tried to stand, Daniel watched her face for pain.

Each time she noticed, she told him to stop hovering.

He never did.

Arthur pleaded guilty to multiple charges and agreed to testify.

Victor pleaded guilty to attempted murder, assault, conspiracy, and obstruction.

Tessa was not charged after investigators confirmed the threats against her son and her cooperation.

Evelyn refused every plea offer.

She insisted she had been manipulated by Arthur.

Then her attorney requested permission for a private meeting with Daniel.

He refused twice.

On the third request, Rachel surprised him.

“Go.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because after tomorrow, she will tell the story to a jury.”

Rachel adjusted the blanket over her knees.

“You deserve to hear the version she tells when there is no audience.”

Daniel agreed.

The meeting took place in a secure attorney room.

Evelyn looked older than she had in the hospital.

No makeup hid the shadows beneath her eyes.

No purple blazer protected her now.

She wore a plain detention uniform.

“I never wanted your father dead,” she said.

Daniel remained silent.

“He was going to expose everything.”

“That sounds like a reason.”

“I wanted time.”

“You withheld an ambulance.”

“I thought he would recover.”

“You heard him struggling to breathe.”

Evelyn’s hands shook.

“Arthur said calling for help would destroy all of us.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“So you chose yourself.”

“I chose the family.”

“No.”

His voice stayed quiet.

“You keep using that word when you mean money.”

Evelyn started crying.

For years, tears from his mother would have made Daniel surrender.

Now he watched carefully.

She wiped them away and immediately changed tactics.

“Rachel will leave you when the money is gone.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“There you are.”

Evelyn blinked.

“That is the mother I know.”

Daniel stood.

“The one who cannot apologize without trying to poison the next thing I love.”

Her expression hardened.

“You will regret humiliating me.”

Daniel looked at her through the glass partition.

“And that is why I came.”

He nodded slowly.

“I needed to know whether you were sorry.”

Evelyn stared back.

He had his answer.

Daniel left without another word.

The next morning, prosecutors prepared for trial.

Then Briggs called before sunrise.

Arthur Bell had suffered a medical emergency in custody.

Daniel’s first thought was that Arthur had tried to escape again.

Briggs corrected him.

“He was poisoned.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Evelyn was locked away.

Victor was locked away.

The poisoning forced prosecutors to reopen every contact connected to Arthur's finances.

It also proved the conspiracy had roots beyond the two people Daniel had spent days blaming.

Rachel listened while Briggs explained that hidden money often created hidden partners.
