Chapter 3 - The Draft Message.

Evelyn’s gaze stayed fixed on Rachel’s broken phone.

Daniel slipped it into his pocket.

“What are you doing down here?”

“My attorney is on his way.”

“That was not my question.”

Evelyn glanced toward the property cabinet.

“Checking on my son.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You had plenty of chances to do that upstairs.”

Her face tightened.

“Daniel, I made a mistake.”

“A mistake is dropping a glass.”

He stepped closer.

“You put both hands on her incision.”

“She was provoking me.”

“By lying in a hospital bed?”

Evelyn looked away.

The movement was small, but Daniel noticed it.

He had spent most of his life accepting his mother’s certainty as proof.

Now every hesitation looked like a crack in a wall he had never questioned.

“What happened to Dad?”

Evelyn’s head snapped back toward him.

“What?”

Daniel watched her closely.

“Rachel wrote something before the crash.”

His mother’s face did not change, but the color drained slightly from her lips.

“She wrote that Dad did not die the way you told me.”

Evelyn folded her arms.

“Your wife has been digging through private family matters for months.”

“So you knew.”

“I knew she was obsessed with money.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That is not what I asked.”

Before Evelyn could answer, Dr. Park appeared at the end of the hall.

“Mr. Carter.”

Daniel turned immediately.

“Is Rachel okay?”

“The pressure on her abdomen reopened a small internal bleed.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She is stable now, but she needs strict monitoring.”

Dr. Park looked toward Evelyn.

“She also requested that only her husband and her sister be allowed into the room.”

Evelyn gave a cold smile.

“How convenient.”

Dr. Park’s expression did not move.

“It is a medical restriction and a patient request.”

Evelyn walked away without another word.

Daniel followed Dr. Park upstairs.

Rachel was awake but exhausted when he entered.

He sat beside the bed and took her hand.

“Why were you looking into my father?”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I wanted proof before I told you.”

“Proof of what?”

She looked toward the door.

“Lock it.”

Daniel did.

Rachel spoke quietly.

“Six weeks ago, your mother asked me to sign a document transferring my rights to the family trust if anything happened to you.”

Daniel frowned.

“What rights?”

“The rights I would have as your spouse.”

“I have never seen that document.”

“That was the problem.”

Rachel shifted and winced.

“I took it to a lawyer.”

Daniel felt cold.

“And?”

“The trust was amended after your father died.”

“By who?”

“Your mother and the family attorney, Arthur Bell.”

Daniel knew Arthur.

Arthur had been at every birthday, funeral, and board meeting since Daniel was a child.

Rachel tightened her fingers around his.

“The signature approving the amendment was your father’s.”

Daniel exhaled.

“So?”

Rachel’s eyes filled with fear.

Daniel tried to remember who had handled the trust after Robert's funeral.

The answer came too easily.

Arthur had brought the papers to Evelyn's house and guided Daniel through every signature while telling him not to worry about technical language.

Daniel had signed wherever Arthur pointed.

Now he wondered what else he had approved without knowing.

“The amendment was signed three days after your father died.”
