Chapter 4 - Three Days After Death.

Daniel did not speak for several seconds.

The monitor beside Rachel’s bed beeped steadily, indifferent to the sentence that had just rearranged his past.

“That is impossible.”

“I know.”

“My father died on March ninth.”

Rachel nodded.

“The amendment is dated March twelfth.”

Daniel stood and walked to the window.

Rain streaked the glass outside.

His father, Robert Carter, had died seven years earlier after what Evelyn described as a sudden cardiac event.

Daniel had been overseas when it happened.

By the time he returned, the funeral had already been arranged.

Evelyn had told him Robert did not want an autopsy.

Daniel had accepted that too.

“What exactly changed in the trust?”

Rachel took a slow breath.

“If you die without children, control of the Carter family assets goes temporarily to your mother.”

“Temporarily?”

“Until the board appoints a successor.”

Daniel turned.

“What happened to the original version?”

“That is what I was trying to find.”

Rachel looked down at the blanket.

“I hired a private investigator named Luke Mercer.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You hired an investigator without telling me?”

“I was afraid you would confront her before we had evidence.”

“I just shoved her into a wall.”

“I know.”

Despite the pain, a tiny exhausted smile touched Rachel’s mouth.

“That is exactly what I was afraid of.”

Daniel sat again.

“Where is Mercer?”

“He called me yesterday.”

“What did he find?”

“He said he found a witness from the night your father died.”

Daniel’s heartbeat quickened.

“Who?”

“He would not say over the phone.”

Rachel’s expression darkened.

“He told me to meet him at a coffee shop near Maya’s apartment.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“He never showed.”

Daniel felt another cold wave pass through him.

“Then what was in the missing envelope?”

“Copies of bank transfers, the trust amendment, and a photo.”

“What photo?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Your mother meeting with the man who drove the car that hit me.”

Daniel stood so fast the chair scraped against the floor.

“You know who hit you?”

“I saw him after the crash.”

“How?”

“He got out of his car for a few seconds.”

Rachel’s voice shook.

“He looked at me through the broken windshield.”

“Did he help you?”

“No.”

“He took something from my passenger seat and drove away.”

“The envelope.”

Rachel nodded.

Daniel walked to the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To call the police.”

Rachel grabbed his sleeve.

“Daniel.”

He looked back.

“There is something else.”

Her eyes moved toward the locked door.

“The man who hit me was in this hospital this morning.”

Daniel went still.

Rachel whispered the rest.

Daniel pictured the crash scene described in the police report.

Rachel's car had been forced across two lanes before striking a concrete divider.

The other driver had never called emergency services.

A stranger passing on the opposite side of the road had made the 911 call.

Someone had watched Rachel bleed and chosen evidence over her life.

“He was wearing an orderly’s uniform.”
