Chapter 7 - His Father's Voice.

Daniel held the photograph until his fingers began to shake.

Briggs took it carefully and sealed it in an evidence sleeve.

“Do not touch anything else yet.”

Daniel stared at the voice recorder.

“What if that is my father?”

Briggs put on gloves and examined it.

The device was old but functional.

There were four files.

The first three contained static and short fragments of conversation.

The fourth began with a man breathing heavily.

Then Robert Carter’s voice filled the tiny speaker.

Daniel sat down on the concrete floor beside the lockers.

He had not heard that voice in seven years.

“If Daniel ever hears this, then I waited too long.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Robert continued.

“Evelyn has been moving money through Bell’s accounts for at least eighteen months.”

Briggs glanced at Daniel.

The recording crackled.

“She says it is for tax protection, but the numbers do not make sense.”

A long pause followed.

“I found a second insurance policy on my life.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“The beneficiary is not Daniel.”

The recording stopped for three seconds and resumed.

“It is Evelyn.”

Daniel could barely breathe.

Robert’s voice became quieter.

“If anything happens to me, do not let my son believe I abandoned him.”

The file ended.

Daniel sat motionless.

Briggs did not speak immediately.

Finally he said, “This changes the investigation.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Into my father’s death?”

“Potentially.”

The burner phone contained one saved contact under the letter V.

Briggs requested a warrant before calling it.

While they waited, Daniel returned to the hospital.

He expected to find Rachel resting.

Instead he found two nurses surrounding her bed.

Rachel was struggling to stay awake.

“What happened?”

One nurse held up an IV medication bag.

“Her blood pressure dropped suddenly.”

Dr. Park entered behind them.

She checked the label, then frowned.

“This medication is not on my order.”

Daniel stared at the bag.

“What is it?”

“A sedative.”

“Who gave it to her?”

No one answered.

The nurse scanned the medication barcode.

The electronic log displayed the name TESSA GLENN.

Daniel felt the room tilt.

“That is the nurse whose badge was used by Victor.”

Dr. Park immediately disconnected the line.

Security locked down the floor.

Detective Briggs returned and began interviewing staff.

Then a janitor reported seeing a woman in a hooded coat leaving through the service elevator.

Security pulled the camera feed.

The woman’s face appeared for less than a second.

Daniel recognized her.

It was Tessa Glenn.

She was crying.

She carried no bag.

In her right hand was a folded piece of paper.

Briggs froze the image.

The paper had a logo in one corner.

Daniel recognized that too.

It belonged to Carter Properties.

Twenty minutes later, Tessa called the police herself.

She was hiding in a parking garage three blocks away.

Her first words to Briggs were not about Rachel.

Dr. Park ordered a complete review of every medication Rachel had received since admission.

Two security officers were assigned outside her door.

Daniel asked for a chair and placed it directly beside the bed.

He had not slept in almost thirty hours, but exhaustion no longer mattered.
