Chapter 10 - He Was Still Breathing.

The recovered message changed everything.
Police sealed the lake house and detained Arthur for questioning.
Evelyn was not formally arrested yet, but she was taken to the station voluntarily under the watch of two detectives.
Daniel returned to the hospital before dawn.
He felt as though he had aged years in one night.
Rachel was awake when he entered.
She took one look at his face and knew something terrible had happened.
âWhat did you find?â
Daniel sat beside her.
âA message from Victor.â
He told her the words.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at the floor.
âI spent seven years believing my father died instantly.â
Rachel squeezed his hand.
âI am sorry.â
âI defended her.â
âYou did not know.â
âI defended her to you.â
Rachel did not answer because they both remembered the arguments.
Evelyn had insulted Rachelâs family, criticized her career, questioned her motives, and repeatedly demanded that Daniel sign financial documents without Rachel present.
Daniel had called it old-fashioned protectiveness.
Now it looked like containment.
Detective Briggs arrived with new information at sunrise.
Victor Lane had been found.
He was hiding in a motel forty miles away.
He had attempted to leave through a bathroom window when officers arrived.
Under questioning, he demanded immunity before speaking.
Prosecutors refused full immunity but offered consideration if his information was independently verified.
Victor talked.
He admitted following Rachel.
He admitted striking her car.
He admitted entering the hospital in stolen scrubs.
Danielâs hands clenched.
âDid my mother order it?â
Briggs hesitated.
âHe says Arthur Bell paid him.â
Daniel frowned.
âArthur?â
âVictor claims your mother did not order Rachelâs crash.â
Rachel looked at Daniel.
âThen why was she meeting him?â
Briggs opened a folder.
âThat is where it gets complicated.â
Victor said Evelyn had contacted him because she discovered Arthur was blackmailing her.
Arthur knew what happened the night Robert died.
Evelyn allegedly paid Victor to recover documents that Arthur was using against her.
âSo she is innocent?â Daniel asked.
Briggs shook his head.
âNo.â
Victorâs statement implicated Evelyn in Robertâs death.
According to him, Robert had collapsed after receiving an injection administered by a private nurse.
Evelyn panicked when Robert remained alive longer than expected.
She called Victor, who had worked as a driver and fixer for Arthur years earlier.
Victor arrived at the lake house.
Robert was still breathing.
âWhat happened next?â
Briggs looked directly at Daniel.
âVictor says your mother told him not to call an ambulance.â
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.
Rachelâs monitor quickened.
Briggs continued quietly.
âThen Arthur arrived.â
âAnd my father?â
âVictor says Arthur held a pillow over his face.â
Daniel stood abruptly.
Before anyone could speak, Briggsâs phone rang.
He listened for ten seconds.
His expression changed.
âWhat?â Daniel demanded.
Briggs lowered the phone.
Rachel reached for Daniel before he could pace away.
She reminded him that Victor's confession still had to be verified and that Arthur would lie if lying bought him another hour.
Daniel knew she was right.
May you like
But he also knew the people who had controlled his family were finally frightened, and frightened people made desperate choices.
âArthur Bell just escaped custody during transport.â
