Chapter 10: The Hidden Legacy

Arthur took a swift step forward, his fists clenched, putting himself between Julian and his mother's bed. "How did you get past the police officer at the door?" he demanded, his voice low and dangerous.

"The cop at the end of the hall went to grab coffee, and the one right outside was distracted by a commotion down in the lobby—a fight broke out near the emergency room entrance," Julian wheezed, wiping rainwater and sweat from his forehead with the back of his sleeve. "Arthur, please! I didn't orchestrate a robbery. I came to warn Clara on Monday, but she wouldn't listen to me!"

"You put my wife and my mother in danger!" Arthur snapped, taking another step toward him. "You showed up asking for fifty thousand dollars!"

"Because I needed to get out of the state!" Julian shouted softly, looking frantically toward the locked door. "Listen to me! I worked for a corporate logistics firm owned by a man named Victor Vance—no relation, just a cruel coincidence. Five years ago, I discovered that Vance's firm was a front for money laundering and illegal land seizures. When I tried to dig deeper, I found old deeds and transfer records signed decades ago. Your father's name, Richard Sterling, was all over them."

Arthur froze, the anger in his chest momentarily giving way to shock. "My father was an honorable man. He was a senior partner at his firm for thirty years."

"Your father was a whistleblower," Julian said, his voice trembling. "He realized Vance's syndicate was stealing property from vulnerable families across the state. Before your father died, he hid the original, unredacted paper ledgers—the ones that could dismantle Vance's entire empire. He stored them in that iron-bound mahogany chest in your mother's room."

Arthur turned to look at Eleanor. She sat up slightly, her faint nod confirming Julian’s words.

"Richard... told me never to open it," Eleanor whispered weakly. "He said... if anything ever happened to him, it was our insurance policy. But I never knew what was inside..."

"Vance found out last week that I was searching for those ledgers to clear my own name," Julian said, his eyes filled with genuine panic. "He tracked me to your city. He isn't sending petty thugs for cash, Arthur. He sent a professional cleaner to retrieve those documents before the statute of limitations on the fraud charges expires next week!"
