It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon when Arthur received a large, sealed manila envelope from the federal receiver’s office. Inside was an addendum—a supplement to his father’s original ledgers that had been held in evidence until all third-party asset claims were resolved. Attached was a brief note from Detective Miller:
Arthur, thought you should have these original personal journals back. The court is finished with them.
Arthur sat at his desk, carefully untying the faded string around the canvas folder. Inside were handwritten notes in his father Richard’s distinct cursive script. Flipping through the final pages, Arthur’s eyes caught a series of entries dated just weeks before his father’s fatal stroke.
One paragraph stood out, written in bold, hurried ink:
