Chapter 25: A Quiet Morning

The weeks following the final release of Richard Sterling’s journals passed with a peaceful, rhythmic steady rhythm. For the first time in years, Arthur woke up without the subconscious weight of unresolved questions pressing against his chest. The morning sun poured into the master bedroom, painting warm golden strips across the hardwood floor.

Downstairs, Clara was already in the kitchen, humming softly to herself as she brewed fresh coffee. The aroma of dark roast and toasted pecans drifted up the stairwell, inviting and warm.

Arthur walked down the steps, pulling on a comfortable knit sweater. "You're up early," he said, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin gently on her shoulder.

"I couldn't sleep," Clara said, leaning back into his embrace with a soft smile. "In a good way, though. My mind was just... light. Julian called this morning. He passed his six-month probation review with flying colors."

"That's fantastic news," Arthur said, taking a cup of coffee from her. "He deserves it. He’s worked hard to turn things around."

"He wants to cook dinner for us tonight at his apartment," Clara said, turning around in his arms to look up at him. "Just a simple meal to say thank you."

"We'll be there," Arthur replied gently. "Both of us."
