Chapter 12: A United Front

Taking immediate advantage of the distraction, Arthur lunged forward with the chrome IV pole, thrusting it with full force into the intruder's chest. The metal struck hard, knocking the man backward onto the wet linoleum of the hallway floor.

Julian didn't hesitate. He tackled the disoriented intruder, wrestling the pistol from his grip and tossing it down the corridor, where it skittered into the darkness of the unlit hallway.

"Arthur, get Clara and your mother out of here!" Julian yelled, pinning the man's arms down with all his body weight. "Go!"

Arthur rushed to Clara, wrapping an arm around her waist as she leaned heavily against him, pale and exhausted from the effort. "Are you okay?" he asked frantically.

"I'm fine... just dizzy," Clara gasped, looking past him toward the bed. "Eleanor!"

Arthur turned to see his mother stepping out of the hospital bed on her own two feet—her hands trembling violently, but her jaw set with an iron resolve he hadn't seen since his childhood. She held a heavy brass key in her hand, which she had retrieved from a small silk pouch tucked beneath her pillow.

"We aren't running anymore," Eleanor said, her voice crisp and clear. "Arthur, take this key. The ledgers aren't just in the house—they're in the floor safe beneath the mahogany chest. Your father made sure no one could destroy them without it."

Heavy footsteps echoed from the stairwell as Detective Miller and two uniformed officers burst into the hallway with flashlights drawn, taking control of the struggling intruder on the floor.

Miller took in the scene—Julian holding the man down, Clara leaning on Arthur, and Eleanor standing tall in her hospital gown.

"Mr. Sterling," Miller breathed out, assessing the chaos. "Care to fill me in?"

Arthur looked at his family—his wife who had fought for him, his brother-in-law who had risked everything to warn them, and his mother who had carried a secret for fifteen years to keep them safe.

"Detective," Arthur said, holding up the brass key as the storm raged outside the window. "We're going to put an end to this tonight."
