Chapter 13: The Blueprint of Betrayal

The dim amber emergency lights of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital slowly gave way to bright white fluorescence as the main power grid surged back online. Detective Miller took control of the scene with swift, practiced authority. The masked intruder, identified from his credentials as a high-priced corporate enforcer named Lawson, was handcuffed and escorted down the hallway in police custody, sullen and silent.
In a private consultation room on the fifth floor, Arthur, Clara, and Julian sat around a laminate table. Eleanor rested in an armchair nearby, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket provided by the nursing staff. Detective Miller leaned against the closed door, holding the brass key Arthur had handed him moments earlier.
"So let me get this straight," Miller said, looking between Julian and Arthur. "Victor Vance—the head of Vance Logistics—has spent the last fifteen years building a real estate empire off illegal foreclosures, forged land deeds, and extortion. And Richard Sterling had the evidence all along?"
"My father realized what Vance was doing shortly before he died," Arthur explained, his voice steady and resolute. "He knew that confronting Vance directly without ironclad proof would only put our family in danger. So he compiled the unredacted ledgers, bank statements, and original deeds, locking them away."
"And Julian discovered the connection while working at Vance’s firm," Clara added, reaching across the table to squeeze her brother's hand.
Julian nodded, his knuckles white. "I was looking for financial irregularities because I suspected Vance was cooking the books. When I stumbled upon the old Sterling files, I realized who Vance really was. I knew he’d come after me if I stayed, but I couldn't leave without making sure Arthur and Clara were safe. I came to the house on Monday to get Clara to listen, but..." He looked down, shame coloring his face. "I was terrified. I sounded like a maniac asking for money to run away."

"We don't have much time," Miller said, checking his watch. "Lawson failed his assignment, but Vance isn't the type to wait around. If he realizes Lawson was taken into custody, he’ll try to destroy any secondary evidence or flee the country."
Arthur stood up, adjusting his cuffs. "Then we don't wait for him to make another move. We go to the house, retrieve the ledgers from the floor safe, and hand them over to the federal authorities tonight."
