Chapter 23: The Unbroken Thread
Arthur drove straight to his mother’s home, the canvas folder resting on the passenger seat beside him.
When he arrived, Eleanor was sitting on the back patio with Clara, enjoying the warm afternoon breeze. Julian was nearby, clearing dry leaves from the garden beds. The peaceful atmosphere felt almost sacred, making Arthur hesitate before bringing up the dark echoes of the past.
"Mom," Arthur said gently as he sat down beside her, placing the folder on the glass patio table. "The court returned Dad’s personal notes today."
Eleanor looked at the worn folder, her expression softening with memory. "Your father kept so much inside, Arthur. He thought he was protecting us by carrying every burden alone."
"He wrote something in his final journal entry," Arthur said, opening to the marked page. "He mentioned an entity called Aegis Holdings—a group that protected Vance from state investigations."
Clara looked up from her tea, her eyes narrowing thoughtfully. "Aegis? Arthur... when I was helping Julian review his old employment records for the prosecutor last winter, that name came up."
Julian stopped his gardening and walked over, wiping his hands on a towel. "Aegis Holdings wasn't a bank or a shell company, Arthur. It was a private trust set up by Judge Edward Sterling—your uncle."
Arthur turned to Julian, stunned. "Uncle Edward?"
"He passed away five years ago," Eleanor whispered, her voice tight with a sudden, painful realization. "Richard stopped speaking to Edward in the late nineties... I always assumed it was over a family dispute regarding your grandfather's estate."

"It wasn't an estate dispute," Arthur said slowly, putting the pieces together. "Dad discovered that his own brother was using his seat on the judicial board to greenlight Vance’s fraudulent land transfers."
"And that’s why Richard never went to the local authorities," Eleanor murmured, tears shining in her eyes. "He couldn't expose Vance without sending his own brother to prison. It was breaking his heart."
