Chapter 9: The Key to the Past

The room felt ice-cold. Arthur stared at his mother, his mind reeling from the revelation.

"A key?" Arthur asked, his voice a breathless whisper. "Mom, are you sure? The police said the lock was picked."

"He used a brass key... I heard the deadbolt turn," Eleanor insisted, her voice gaining a desperate edge. "He walked in like he owned the place. He was wearing a dark jacket, but when he stepped into the light... I saw his face before he pulled his mask up."

Arthur felt his blood run cold. "Did you recognize him?"

Eleanor shook her head faintly. "No... but he knew where everything was. He didn't wander. He walked straight toward my room... as if he was looking for something specific. Not money. Not jewelry."

"What could he possibly want in your room, Mom?"

Eleanor closed her eyes, a look of deep, ancient pain washing over her features. "The mahogany chest... in the back of my closet. The one from your father’s estate."

Arthur remembered the chest. It was a sturdy, iron-bound wooden box that had belonged to his late father, Richard Sterling, who had passed away over fifteen years ago. Arthur had always assumed it contained old legal documents, family photo albums, and worthless heirloom trinkets. He hadn't thought about it in years.

"What's inside that chest, Mom?" Arthur asked, leaning even closer.

Before Eleanor could answer, the electronic lock on the hospital door clicked softly, and the door swung open. Arthur jumped up, turning around defensively.

It wasn't a doctor or a nurse. Standing in the doorway, drenched from a sudden summer downpour outside and breathing heavily, was a man in a soaked grey jacket. His face was pale, his eyes wide with desperate terror.

Arthur recognized the face immediately from the security camera footage.

It was Julian Vance.

"Arthur," Julian gasped, locking the door behind him with a quick flip of the deadbolt. "You have to help me. They aren't after money. They're after what your father hid!"
