Chapter 15: The Final Confrontation

Arthur carefully lifted the first ledger from the safe and opened it. Page after page contained meticulous hand-written records, bank routing numbers, fraudulent land transfer entries, and signed affidavits detailing Victor Vance’s criminal syndicate.

"This is incredible," Detective Miller breathed, leaning down to inspect the pages. "This isn't just evidence; it’s a complete roadmap of Vance's entire operation over twenty years. Federal prosecutors are going to have a field day with this."

Suddenly, the glass in the patio doors out in the kitchen shattered with a loud, violent crash.

"Police! Nobody move!" an officer shouted from the hallway, followed immediately by the sound of a scuffle and a heavy body hitting the floor.

Miller drew his sidearm instantly, stepping in front of Arthur, Clara, and Julian. "Stay here!" he ordered, moving swiftly into the corridor.

Arthur locked the floor safe, clutching the primary ledger tightly against his chest. "Clara, stay behind me," he whispered.

A tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke tailored suit stepped into the doorway of Eleanor's bedroom, flanked by two armed men in dark suits. His face was weathered, sharp, and filled with cold arrogance.

It was Victor Vance himself.

"Put the gun down, Detective," Vance said smoothly, as one of his men held Detective Miller at gunpoint near the hallway entrance, having disarmed him in the sudden breach. "I knew Lawson was incompetent, but I didn't think he’d fail so spectacularly. Luckily, I prefer to handle important family matters personally."

Vance’s cold eyes swept over the room, landing squarely on Arthur and the leather ledger held firmly in his hands.

"Arthur Sterling," Vance said, a cruel smile touching his lips. "Your father was a thorn in my side fifteen years ago, and it seems his son has inherited his stubbornness. Give me the books, and perhaps we can reach an understanding."
