Chapter 17: Dawn of Reckoning

As the sun began to rise over the city, casting a warm golden light through the storm-cleared clouds, Maplewood Drive returned to a quiet stillness. Federal agents cataloged the contents of the floor safe, carefully securing the three ledgers into evidence bags that would permanently dismantle Victor Vance's criminal empire.

Julian stood on the front porch, watching as Vance was led away in handcuffs, stripped of his power and influence. Clara walked out to stand beside her brother, throwing a soft wool blanket over his shoulders.

"It's over, Julian," she whispered, tears of relief shining in her eyes. "You're finally free."

Julian looked at her, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm so sorry, Clara. For everything. For running, for disappearing, for bringing this to your doorstep."

"You came back to protect us," Arthur said, stepping out onto the porch and placing a firm, supportive hand on Julian's shoulder. "That's what family does. We're going to get you a good lawyer, Julian. You're going to set the record straight, and then we're going to rebuild."

Julian wiped a tear from his cheek and smiled—a genuine, unburdened smile for the first time in ten years. "Thank you, Arthur."
