Chapter 2: Unraveling the Scene

Arthur stood frozen in the middle of the kitchen, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. His mind struggled to process the contradiction before him: his loving wife, standing over his unconscious mother, bathed in blood, acting as if nothing more untoward than a spilled cup of coffee had occurred.
"Clara..." Arthur gasped, taking a cautious step forward, his hands raised instinctively in a protective, comforting gesture. "What... what happened here? What did you do?"
Clara blinked, as if waking from a deep trance. She looked down at her hand, which was still loosely gripping the silver fondue fork she had taken from the dish rack. Her fingers slackened, and the utensil dropped to the floor with a metallic clink.
"I didn't... Arthur, it's not what you think," Clara whispered, her calm facade suddenly crumbling into sheer terror. Tears pooled in her eyes, mixing with the blood tracking down her cheek. "I was trying to help her!"
Arthur bypassed Clara entirely, dropping to his knees beside his mother. "Mom? Mom, can you hear me?"
Eleanor’s eyes were closed, her breathing shallow but steady. There was a faint bruise forming near her temple, but miraculously, no open wounds on her head or body. Arthur gently touched her neck, feeling the fragile, rhythmic thrum of her pulse. She was alive, merely unconscious from the shock of the fall.
"Call nine-one-one!" Arthur demanded, turning his head back toward Clara.
Clara stood petrified, staring at the smartphone on the counter. "Arthur, look at the phone," she rasped, her voice trembling violently. "Please... before you call anyone, look at the monitor."
Arthur frowned, a mixture of rage and confusion clouding his judgment. He glanced up at the illuminated screen. The feed from the security app showed the kitchen hallway from a high angle. The timestamp in the corner read 10:23 AM—several hours earlier.

"What is this?" Arthur snapped, his focus torn between his unconscious mother and his bleeding wife. "Clara, why are you bleeding? What happened in this room?"
"There was someone else here," Clara sobbed, pressing her hand over her bleeding forehead. "He... he broke in through the side door. I was upstairs when I heard Eleanor scream."
