Chapter 11 - Beneath the Staircase Julian led Elena and Lily through a hidden passage behind the library. The air was cold and smelled of dust and old stone. The narrow corridor slanted downward beneath the grand staircase.

“This house has tunnels?” Elena asked, breathless.

“It has a past,” Julian said.

They reached a chamber lit by one hanging bulb. Shelves of old ledgers lined the walls. Boxes. Photographs. Files. Evidence of lives carefully erased.

Elena stopped at a dusty envelope with her own name written across it.

Her fingers trembled as she opened it.

Inside were photographs of her as a child.

With her mother.

With a man she recognized only from one faded memory.

“My father,” she whispered.

Julian watched her carefully. “He never stopped looking for you.”

Elena looked up, shocked.

Julian’s expression was unreadable, but his voice softened.

“He trusted me to protect the truth. I failed him once.”

Before she could ask what he meant, Lily touched one of the ledgers.

“Mommy,” she said quietly, “this is bad people.”

Elena looked down and saw the names.

Dozens of them.

May you like

And beside many of them, dates.

Disappearances.
