Chapter 15 - The Boy in the Photograph The safe deposit box contained more than legal documents.

Inside was a photograph of Elena’s father standing beside a younger Julian.
And a note.
To Elena, if this reaches you, then it means I failed to protect you myself. Trust Julian, even when he seems impossible to trust. He is not the enemy. He is the one trying to break the door open.
Elena read the note twice.
Then she folded it carefully, her eyes wet.
When Julian entered the room, she held up the photograph.
“You knew my father well.”
He nodded. “He taught me how to tell the difference between power and responsibility.”
“Did he think you would become this?”
Julian almost smiled. “Probably not.”
For the first time, Elena saw something human in him.
Not polish.
Not command.
A weary man with too many scars and too much history.
“Why are you helping me?” she asked.

He looked toward the hall where Lily was singing softly to herself.
“Because someone should have helped your mother,” he said. “And because your daughter deserves better than what this family built.”
