Chapter 7 - The Old Family Lie Elena felt the floor shift beneath her.

“My mother died when I was eight,” she said.

“I know what you were told,” Julian replied. “I know what was written on paper. But this family has spent decades rewriting truth into something easier to control.”

Elena shook her head, angry now. “Why would you tell me this?”

Julian looked at the portrait again.

“Because your mother discovered what this house was being used for. She tried to leave. They made sure she never could.”

The words hit Elena like ice water.

Lily gripped her hand.

Julian took a slow breath. “You were brought here because your father left something behind—evidence. And if my brother gets it first, people will die.”

Elena stared at him, horrified. “Your brother?”

He nodded once.

“Tonight, he arrives.”
