Chapter 2 - Beneath the Marble Down below, the air was thick and stale.

The woman—Elena—pressed her back against the rough wooden wall, trying to steady her breathing. Every inhale felt too loud, like it might give her away… even though she already knew she had been found.
Dust clung to her skin. Her hair was tangled, streaked with dirt. A thin cut along her cheek had dried into a dark line.
She had stopped crying hours ago.
Now there was only fear.
Above her, faint light spilled through the open hatch, casting long shadows across the cramped space. The ladder stood just out of reach, like a cruel invitation.
She heard footsteps.
Measured. Heavy.
Not rushed.
That terrified her more than anything.
Then a shape appeared above—the silhouette of a man blocking the light.
Elena’s chest tightened.
She looked up.
Their eyes met.
There was no anger in his expression. No shouting. No chaos.
Only control.
Only certainty.
That was worse.
She swallowed hard, her voice trembling despite her effort to stay strong.
“Please…” she whispered.
Her mind raced—not for herself, but for her daughter.
Lily.
Was she safe? Was she scared?
Or… did she understand what was happening?
A small voice echoed from above.
“Mommy’s in there.”
Elena’s heart shattered.
“Lily!” she called, her voice cracking.
She moved forward instinctively, reaching toward the ladder.
But she stopped.
Because the man moved first.
He didn’t descend.
May you like
He didn’t help.
He simply watched.
