Chapter 12 - The Real Heir Marcus had not returned to claim money.

He had returned to claim control.

The records in the hidden chamber revealed that the Blackwood family’s fortune had been built on forcing desperate people into silence. Women. Servants. Witnesses. Some were bribed. Some were threatened. Some were never seen again.

And Julian, the “cold” brother, had been trying to bury the family’s crimes by exposing them from the inside.

Elena stared at the files in disbelief. “Why not go to the police?”

Julian gave a humorless laugh. “Because the police were paid before I was old enough to understand what was happening.”

He picked up a photograph from the floor. It showed Marcus with several officials, smiling at a charity event.

“People like him do not survive by accident,” Julian said. “They survive because everyone else is too scared to speak.”

Elena looked at him, really looked at him, and saw not a villain, but a man carrying the weight of a rotten inheritance.

Lily stepped forward and placed her hand in his.

“You’re trying to help,” she said.
