Chapter 4: The Quiet Empty

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off the sounds of Julian’s frantic screaming and Chloe’s hysterical sobbing as they were dragged down the front steps. Then, the sprawling mansion was plunged into absolute silence.

Eleanor stood frozen for a long moment. The adrenaline that had fueled her through the confrontation was beginning to recede, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion. She walked over to an antique gilded mirror hanging above the fireplace and stared at her reflection.

The white pantsuit was a deliberate choice—a symbol of a fresh start, untainted and sharp. But the small smear of dried blood on her lower lip was a stark reminder of the ugly reality she had endured to get here. With a steady hand, she took a silk handkerchief from her pocket and wiped it away.

She let out a breath she felt she had been holding for six months. The grief of her failed marriage had already been processed in the lonely, quiet hours of the night. What she felt now wasn't sorrow; it was the hollow ache of a surgical amputation. The cancer was gone, but the recovery was just beginning.

Marcus entered the room quietly, holding a tablet. "The accounts are officially locked, ma'am. The company's legal team has drafted the civil suit for the embezzled funds. Will you need anything else tonight?"

Eleanor looked around the opulent, excessively decorated room. It felt suffocating. "Just a cup of chamomile tea, Marcus. And first thing tomorrow, call the real estate agent. I want to sell this house. It's time to downsize."
