Chapter 6: Crumbling Facades

Across town, the atmosphere was entirely different. Julian sat on the edge of a sagging, floral-patterned bed in a cheap highway motel. The only light came from a flickering neon sign outside the window, casting harsh red and blue shadows across his face.

He stared blankly at his phone. Every banking app displayed the same terrifying message: Access Denied. Account Frozen.

Chloe paced the narrow strip of stained carpet between the bed and the television, her red dress now wrinkled and smelling faintly of stale cigarette smoke from the lobby.

"So, what's the plan?" she snapped, stopping to glare at him. "You said you had offshore accounts she didn't know about. You said we were going to the Maldives!"

"She found them," Julian muttered, rubbing his temples. "She found everything, Chloe. I don't know how, but she did. The lawyers won't even take my calls unless I can provide a retainer, and I can't even buy a cup of coffee right now."

Chloe’s eyes narrowed. The feigned adoration she usually showered him with was completely absent, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. "You mean to tell me you have absolutely nothing? You let your wife outsmart you, and now we're broke?"

"She's not my wife anymore," Julian spat back, his temper flaring. "And we're in this together, remember? For richer or poorer."

Chloe let out a dry, humorless laugh. She walked over to her designer handbag and slung it over her shoulder. "I signed up for the 'richer' part, Julian. I’m not doing 'poorer' in a roach motel."

Without another word, she turned and walked out the door, the click of her heels fading down the exterior hallway. Julian was left entirely alone in the dark, the reality of his own making finally crashing down upon him.
