Chapter 1 - The Crystal LieThe ballroom of the estate was suffocatingly perfect. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the wealthy elite of the city, their laughter mingling with the soft hum of a string quartet. But for James, the opulent surroundings felt like a meticulously crafted prison. He strode through the sea of black tuxedos and shimmering evening gowns, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

In his arms, he carried his seven-year-old daughter, Annie. She was trembling, her small hands clutching his lapel. She wore a simple beige dress, a stark contrast to the diamonds and silk surrounding them. Her cheeks were tear-stained, and she gripped a piece of bread as if it were her only anchor in a terrifying world.
James’s eyes locked onto his mother, Eleanor. She stood near a towering white, multi-tiered cake, radiating icy elegance in a sheer-paneled, sparkling gown. She smiled at a passing guest, a mask of aristocratic grace that made James’s stomach churn.
"Mom," James said, his voice cutting through the polite chatter. "We need to talk."
Eleanor’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before reforming. "James, darling, whatever is the matter? And why is the child crying at a black-tie event?"
James stepped closer, ignoring the whispers rippling through the crowd. "Did you throw Annie and Catherine out?"
The silence that followed was deafening. Eleanor’s eyes darted around the room, assessing the social damage. Before she could craft a lie, Annie buried her face in James’s neck.
"Grandma said you didn't love us anymore," Annie sobbed, her small voice breaking his heart into a thousand jagged pieces.
Before Eleanor could issue a denial, two older men in sharp tuxedos stepped forward from the periphery. One of them, Arthur, James's longtime family attorney, held his smartphone with a grim expression.
"Sir," Arthur interrupted, his tone heavy with gravity. "I've just received the forensic analysis. Your wife never wrote the divorce letter. It’s a complete forgery."
James felt the air leave his lungs. He stared at his mother, the woman who had raised him, suddenly seeing a stranger. A tear slipped down his own cheek, a mix of profound relief and agonizing betrayal.

"

What have you done?" James whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying quietness.
