Chapter 13 - A New RoutineAutumn arrived, painting the city in shades of gold and amber. It was Annie’s first day at a new, progressive private school that focused on arts and community rather than the stifling elite academies Eleanor had previously forced her into.

James and Catherine walked her to the front gates together. Annie wore a bright yellow backpack, swinging her parents' hands.

"Are you nervous?" Catherine asked, kneeling to adjust Annie's collar.

"A little," Annie admitted. "But Daddy said they have a whole room just for painting."

"They do," James smiled. "And I'll be right here at 3:00 PM to pick you up. Have a great day, sweetie."

They watched her run through the gates, turning back to wave before disappearing into the building. James took Catherine’s hand, lacing his fingers through hers. For the first time in his life, the morning felt entirely, wonderfully normal.
