Chapter 4 - The County WardThe drive felt like an eternity. James navigated the empty city streets, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. In the backseat, Annie had finally fallen asleep, exhausted by the night's trauma. The silence of the car was broken only by the sudden ringing of the Bluetooth system.

"Arthur, tell me you have something," James answered, his voice tight.
"County General," Arthur replied, the usual crispness of his tone softened by empathy. "She was admitted yesterday evening for severe pneumonia and exhaustion. She’s in the public ward. I’ve already dispatched a private medical team to facilitate a transfer, sir."

"Cancel the transfer for now," James instructed, turning the steering wheel sharply toward the downtown district. "I need to see her first. I need her to know I'm here."
He pulled up to the weathered facade of the hospital. It was a far cry from the pristine clinics his family funded, a stark reminder of the reality Catherine had endured while he sat in a gilded tower. He gently scooped the sleeping Annie into his arms and walked through the sliding glass doors, ready to face the woman he loved.
