Chapter 5 - Room 304The sterile smell of bleach and old linoleum hit James as he stepped out of the elevator. A tired nurse pointed him toward Room 304. It was a crowded ward with four beds, separated only by thin, faded curtains.

In the corner bed by the window, Catherine lay pale and still. Her once vibrant hair was tangled, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath her eyes. An IV dripped steadily into her thin arm. Seeing her so fragile, so broken by his mother’s cruelty, brought James to his knees.
Annie stirred in his arms, blinking against the harsh fluorescent lights. "Mommy?" she whispered, slipping down to run to the bedside.
Catherine’s eyelids fluttered. She weakly turned her head, her breath catching as she saw her daughter. Then, her eyes shifted to James. Instantly, the relief in her gaze vanished, replaced by a defensive, heartbreaking fear. She tried to sit up, her voice raspy. "What are you doing here, James? Haven't you done enough?"
