Catherine pulled Annie close, her eyes flashing with a mix of anger and sorrow. "You didn't know you wanted a divorce? You didn't know you sent your lawyers to kick us out while you were in Europe?"
"I never wrote that letter," James said, his voice breaking. He sank into the plastic chair beside her bed, burying his face in his hands. "My mother forged my signature. She intercepted my calls, told me you had packed up and left because you were tired of the pressure. I thought you abandoned me."
Catherine stared at him, searching his face for the lie. But all she saw was the raw, unfiltered agony of a man who had lost everything.

"She told me you were ashamed of us," Catherine whispered, a tear escaping her eye. "She said Annie was a disappointment."
"She lied," James choked out, reaching for her hand. "She lied about everything."
